What's next for Tamil schools?

Posted by Kannan

First and foremost, I would personally like to invite you to my blog. As a typical Indian youth, I've been finding a place to voice my feelings without anyone influencing me. Thanks to my fellow blogging friends, I guess I've found a place here in the blogosphere.

Now, back to the post.
Well, as we can see right now, the number of Indian students in Tamil schools achieving straight A's in UPSR has been increasing from year to year(Note that I mentioned 'INDIAN" students and not Tamil, Telegu, or Malayalee students). It's a good sign of improvement in our society. But than, is this it? Is academic excellency in the first public examination would be the pinnacle of success for our Tamil schools? Why are we not going further than that? What I am trying to emphasize here is that, what's the point if our young kids are getting straight A's in UPSR but the physical condition of our Tamil schools are deteriorating from time to time? Ask yourself, when was the the last time you did something to improve the conditions of our Tamil schools? Well i doubt whether some of you had ever visited a Tamil school what more caring to improve the conditions of it? This is a bitter fact that most of us choose to ignore.

Just look at the Chinese schools which are mushrooming around us. Such vernacular schools are at the same age as our Tamil schools. But compare their conditions with ours. Aren't we in a pitiful state? You may ask on how did this condition occur. Simple, when you find some free time, just drop by a Tamil school at 6.00pm during school days and compare the situation with any Chinese school. At Chinese schools, you may see parents in a showcase of luxurious cars waiting to pick their children back home which is in contrast with Tamil schools where parents would be waiting in motorbikes and most to most, school vans to pick children back home. I'm sorry if this is a slap on the face for poor Indians but it's really a fact.

What happened to all the rich Indians? Well, read on.
The rich Indians in the other hand would prefer to send their children to private schools and convents. For them, sending their kids to Tamil schools pulls down their dignity. They would happily spend thousands and thousands of dollars in going on tours around the world. But when it comes down to helping the Tamil schools, "Ekonomi tight la brother". Just have a look at the common sight in the temple. After every pooja, Indians would gracefully take out some 'red' notes to be given to the iyers. I just have a question you, don't the iyers have a fixed salary to perform their duty? Then why do you have to 'donate' to them? Show off eh?
Imagine if every Indian stops 'donating' to these iyers but in turn give the money to the Tamil schools, then I don't think the little kids of Tamil schools would ever have to go around asking for donations for their schools.

Ponder on this,
We are the proud owners of the tallest Murugan statue in the world, but we don't even have a single Tamil HIGH School? Why go until high school? Just look at the current condition of a Tamil primary school below.

TEPI SUNGAI TAMIL SCHOOL KLANG.

How pitiful it is eh?

Now I'll just leave it to you to decide on what YOU are willing to do for our Tamil schools. We've done it academic wise, now lets go on further!

P/s,
Since this is my first post, I apologize if there are any mistakes in what and how I wrote. Sincerely I would be happy if out of everyone who read my articles, at least one person would be ready to be the change and help to improve our society.
THANK YOU.

i dont kno how many ppl im gonna offend wit tis post, but plz bear wit me.

1)only in malaysia do we 'indians' demand our rights to have education in our mother tongue, tamil in most occasion.
& malaysia is a nation where 'indians' do not get equal rights as citizens.
do you see a correlation here?

dasar pecah-perintah seems to have done a great job, i guess.

2)compared to our neighbouring country indonesia, we 'indians' still wanna be called 'indians' instead of 'malaysians'.
their sense of patriotism seems to be inborn, while ours, come one and off as we see fit, when certain changes are desired to be made.
we feel pride in the word "malaysian-indian".
the white man frequently asks, "so are u malaysian ? or indian? coz u look brown to me".....
i try explainin n they get more confused, "so why are u not just malaysian? u were born there rite?"

3)please dont compare donating to temples/iyers at as the same as donating for education.
if u believe in continuing indian culture by maintaining tamil schools, then i believe we are cultivating hinduism by helping the iyers/pujaris. it is one of the duty/dharma of a born hindu to donate to the temple, so that religiousness can be spread. the muslims and christians have it too.
as a caring citizen, u may have noticed tat the iyer is not paid that much by the temple management and lives in a pretty shabby condition.
also, plz understand that not everyone affords to part with 'red' notes.
my family offers a couple 'blue' notes or a 'green' note max.

im not all against tamil school here. theres many ways to overcome or at least help elevate this situation.

for starters, this dilapitated conditions tamil schools are facing should be shown in more mainstream media. as i have noted, many a times, these things only appear in tamil newspaper, n since certain politicians own the newspapers, certain papers dont wanna put up stuff done by the other politician.its a saddening situation.
also, u agree the rich are sending their children to non-tamil schools, then we may conclude that they read non-tamil newspapers too.

i appreciate the afford done by the cyber-community in creating awareness amongst readers. many good blogs out there have been constantly bringing up matters such as this. thanks raajarox n mib.

we could also use the creativity of the new generation photo-journalists to expose the conditions faced by students.
as they say, a picture paints a thousand words, or more.

people want to help but they just dont know how.
and they are are scared of the money being misused.

u may recall how a certain university built in northern malaysia always didnt have enough money to be completed even though millions were collected by public donations and charity events held everywhere.

im not sure if my post helped u in anyway, but this is just what i feel about wats goin on.

i do not know how to help
i do not know how to
i do not know how
i do not know
i do not
i do

Indeed you're touching on something that has been a subject of debate lately.

Most of us had awaken to contribute towards the well being of our schools. But is that all it takes to bring our Tamil school students to a higher level?

The only thing that is bothering Tamil school today is the facilities. It's all down to the infrastructure. Everyone is saying will help, but very few are actually proving their word of mouth.

It's a never ending subject, the least we can do is continuously help what we can, as long as we can.

And yes, a warm welcome to the blogging world brother, Cheers.

@kavin
Thanks for the 'supplement' post. You see bro, What i tried to explain bout donating to the temple priest is that, the rich one's who easily take out 'red' notes which is not for the charity of the priest but more towards showing off.

@Durai
That's the exact reason why i published the picture to show how bad the facilities are in Tamil schools.
Thanks for dropping by bro.

Most of the current youngsters mindset have been set in such a way that Tamil schools are ALWAYS in a deteriorating condition, which is true to a certain extent.

But I wonder how many of them would actually think on doing something to uplift the image of 'our' schools and thus, contributing to the betterment of our students.

Lets hope for the best for our schools.

Nice post brother and happy blogging. =)

I beg to differ to the statement by kavind that goes ' iyer is not paid that much by the temple management and lives in a pretty shabby condition.'
Maybe they are not paid much by the temple management, but they earn in thousand performing rituals for marriages, funerals, u name it. And also not forgetting seeing jathagams, and also performing 'correction' poojas resulting from not so perfect horoscope that can cost from hundreds to thousands of ringgit.
All iyers that I know drives at least a Beamer or Mercedes. None of them lives in a shabby condition. N how much do these iyers contribute towards the development of hinduism in this country? It's almost NIL. There is a saying in Tamil, u can live in a place where there is no temple, but not somewhere there is no school. Indians should STOP giving money to iyers n use it for something else for fruitful.
